- Meia Praia has a substantial coastal dune system.
- Lagos completed an EU-supported dune rehabilitation project.
- The works included elevated boardwalks and measures designed to prevent trampling and stabilise the dunes.
- The developer behind the proposed Meia Praia hotel is the Portimão-based Jupiter Hotel Group.
- Land clearing has begun on the site beside Meia Praia.
What we do not know
- Was the current project formally screened under Portugal’s EIA legislation?
- Was a reasoned decision issued that an EIA was unnecessary?
- Which current licence authorises construction?
- How does the current design relate to the 2008 Meia Praia Bay Resort?
- Have cumulative effects been assessed?
- How will stormwater, lighting, traffic and increased beach access be managed?
- Were APA, CCDR Algarve and other environmental authorities consulted?
- What ongoing obligations apply to the EU-funded dune project?
